Space Force unveils its official song 'Semper Supra' and it feels like a cringey parody     DATE: 2024-05-20 18:20:41

Space Force unveiled its official song and phew boy is it cringey. It's a chorus singing lyrics about the limitless sky and "the watchful eye" of the "guardians beyond the blue." It's just not great. It's weird. And it's absolutely perfect for the Space Force.

The song is titled “Semper Supra" after the Space Force's Latin motto meaning "Always Above." Here's the song.

In case you were wondering here are the lyrics in full.

We're the mighty watchful eye,
Guardians beyond the blue,
The invisible front line,
Warfighters brave and true.
Boldly reaching into space,
There's no limit to our sky.
Standing guard both night and day,
We're the Space Force from on high.

Not to be too cynical here, but honestly I had to confirm the whole thing wasn't a parody. The sincere references to our space "warfighters" and the "mighty watchful eye" over us all seemed so strange. Yet it is very real. The Space Force itself put out a press release about the song. As one person in Mashable's Slack chat said, "we live in such an uncanny, Starship Troopersworld."

Space Force was created by former President Donald Trump in 2019, basically to be the military, but in space. It's always seemed like a strange, close-to-parody branch of the military. Hell, Netflix made a sitcom about it almost immediately. Trump even claimed in a speech to have made the whole thing up on a whim.

"We're doing a tremendous amount of work in space. I said, maybe we need a new force. We'll call it the space force," he said in 2018. "And I was not really serious, and then I said, 'What a great idea!' Maybe we'll have to do that."

So sure, a sincere song about the space warriors of the United States seems to fit this whole thing very well. People immediately joked about it online.

Honestly, they should have just leaned into the absurdity of it all and had some sick guitar riffs or a sax solo. But oh well, you get what you get.
